Ethylbenzene Complete Technology for Realizing Cleaner Production

The “Phenylbenzene and Ethylene Liquid Phase Alkylation Production of Ethylbenzene Complete Technology Development Project” completed by the cooperation of Petrochemical Research Institute of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation and Sinopec Beijing Yanhua Petrochemical Co., Ltd. Second prize for scientific and technological progress.
The Research Institute of Petrochemical Science and Technology started the research on the liquid-phase alkylation of benzene and ethylene to ethylbenzene since 1990. After small-scale trials, pilot tests, and industrial tests, the AEB-2 alkyl group with high activity and selectivity for ethylbenzene has been developed. The catalyst and AEB-1 type transalkylation catalyst have developed a new process for cyclic fixed bed alkylation, and a 67,000 tons/year ethylbenzene production facility has been established, forming a complete set of ethylbenzene production technology with independent intellectual property rights.
The technology solves the equipment corrosion and environmental pollution problems of the original aluminum trichloride-based ethylbenzene production facility, belongs to a clean production process, and the reaction conditions are mild. The xylene content of ethylbenzene in the product is low (<50×10-6). The alkylation catalyst has the characteristics of high activity, good selectivity to ethylbenzene, and stable activity. The transalkylation catalyst has the advantages of low reaction temperature, good selectivity to ethylbenzene and stable activity. The cyclic fixed bed alkylation process solves the dissolution of ethylene in benzene to ensure the reaction under liquid phase conditions, makes full use of the reaction heat and controls the temperature rise of the reactor, effectively inhibits the coking reaction on the catalyst and thus enhances the activity stability of the catalyst. There are original technologies in such areas. The catalyst and process have applied for 6 Chinese patents, 1 U.S. patent, and 1 Italian patent.
Ethylbenzene is a raw material for the production of styrene, and styrene is used for the production of polystyrene, styrene-butadiene rubber, ABS resin and other synthetic materials. The traditional production of ethylbenzene is mostly aluminum trichloride. The disadvantages are long process flow, corrosion of equipment and serious environmental pollution. The gas-phase alkylation process that appeared in the early 1980s solved the problems of equipment corrosion and environmental pollution, but there were disadvantages such as high content of xylene impurities in ethylbenzene products. Since then, a liquid-phase alkylation process has been developed abroad, which has the advantages of no equipment corrosion, no environmental pollution, low reaction temperature, simple process flow, and low xylene impurity content (100×10-6).
