Chang Wei: GPHG is short for Geneva Watch Grand Prix. It is undoubtedly the most important watch award in the world. Based on the Swiss watch capital, it collects competition watches from all over the world. The organizing committee is operated by a professional foundation. The jury is composed of people from nearly 30 countries. To a certain extent, it takes into account the knowledge of representatives of different regions of the world on watches, and has become a fair, just and open world-class watch competition.
How are GPHG awards set?
Chang Wei: As a 17-year-old watch grand prix, GPHG ’s awards are clearly set up in 12 categories: ladies ’watch category, complicated ladies’ watch category, men ’s watch category, chronograph Watch group, tourbillon watch and special escapement group, calendar watch group, time zone watch group, sports watch group, jewelry watch group, handmade art watch group, excellent mechanical watch group, "Little Finger" group. In addition, there are some special awards, such as the most valuable Golden Finger Award, the special jury award, the best innovation award, the best reproduction award, the young student award, etc., so this year is a total of 17 awards.
Who chooses GPHG ?
Chang Wei: The selection of GPHG models is selected by an expert jury. The jury is composed of people from nearly 30 countries, taking into account the knowledge of watchmakers in different regions of the world to the greatest extent.
The jury members are recruited by the GPHG Foundation, which includes people in various fields such as government agencies, watch retail, watch schools, watch museums, media, and academics. Overall, it is a comprehensive three-dimensional structure.
How is GPHG selected?
Chang Wei: The selection of GPHG is divided into two stages. The first stage is to select 6 watches in each group from all the registered models, and then score each watch through the network. Submitted, after a comprehensive statistical comparison of scores, there will be 6 shortlisted watches in each group, for a total of 72 watches. These watches will be arranged for world tour in the next few months.
Early November, the week before the grand prize announcement, will enter the second stage. Nearly 30 judges will gather in Geneva to select the 72 watches with a full day (9:00 a.m.-6: 00 p.m.). The judges will also be divided into different groups to try on and discuss, but the members of the group are not fixed. They will be reorganized N times a day in order to discuss and collide with more judges, and finally score the watch comprehensively (of course it is private Yes, there is no communication in this link). Although each judge ’s score will inevitably be affected by personal preference for the brand or watch, ultimately, the overall score of all judges will be aggregated, and the factors of personal preference will be weakened, so the maximum objective score will be obtained.
Why do big brands fail?
Chang Wei: Yes, for example, the winner of this year's best calendar is Greubel Forsey. Obviously, the two major rivals Lange and Audemars Piguet have lost. Because GPHG's selection is for the same category of entry models, rather than brands, it is more targeted, of course, it also shows its fairness.
Is there a threshold for registration? Can Chinese watch brands also participate in the competition?
Chang Wei: There is no threshold. Brands who sign up for the competition only need to pay an entry fee of 500 Swiss francs per watch. If you are fortunate to be shortlisted, you will need to pay an additional 5,000 Swiss francs for the final world tour and other expenses. Chinese watch brands already have many contestants, such as Langqiao and Wan Xiquan, who have participated many times, and this year Beijing Watch and Langtu have also begun to participate.
