Don't forget to recycle after you drink
Research says recycled PET can be used as a food-grade sustainable packaging
A new recycling facility will double Britain’s ability to recycle plastic beverage bottles. The factory will enable the United Kingdom to handle 75,000 tons of bottles each year, compared to the previous processing capacity of 35,000 tons per year.
Polyethylene (PET) is one of the most commonly used plastic containers and is commonly used for water and bubble beverages. Today, Coca-Cola is working with the British Green Plastic Group to build a £15 million processing plant in the east of England.
At the same time, the environmental group pledged to Coca-Cola to provide annual recycled PET - recycled PET can be used as a food-grade sustainable package.
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the United Kingdom called the project "a future blueprint for innovation and shows how manufacturers can deal with this challenge responsibly."
Lord Henley, minister of waste management at the British Ministry of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: "This investment will build public enthusiasm for recycling and make it easier for them to buy recycled plastic products."
Henley added: “It has more than doubled the capacity of converting used plastic bottles into new plastic bottles in the UK. This has reduced the carbon footprint of each bottle at the time of production compared to the use of pure raw materials. â€
Independent research has shown that 68% of products made from recycled plastics are low carbon intensive products compared to those made with new materials. It is reported that the environmental protection plant is expected to be completed and used in 2012.
