The Institute of Psychology has made new achievements in the study of the perception of biological movement time

Perceptual processing of time information (hundreds of milliseconds to seconds) within a fine-scale range plays a vital role in human daily activities. However, its processing mechanism remains an unsolved mystery.

Jiang Yi's research group at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences found that biological motion information can extend the perception of temporal distance using the time-resolving task, and this effect of time-distance extension has nothing to do with the overall shape information of biological motion and the subjective awareness of the observer. The study used point-light biological motion (point-light biological motion), which means that the motion information is only composed of light-point motion attached to the head of human or animal and some important joints. The results show that when the physical presentation time is equal, the presentation time of the erectile biological stimulus perceived by the observer is longer than that of the inverted control stimulus. Interestingly, local biomotor stimuli that are unfamiliar to the observer (completely scrambling the overall shape information of the biological motion and only retaining the local motion information) also have the same time interval extension effect, and when removing the biological objects contained in the biological motion At feature time, the effect disappears completely, indicating that the observed prolonged effect of time perception is induced by the biological characteristics of the biological movement itself.

The study shows that biological motion has a time coding characteristic that is different from non-biological motion, and reveals that there may be a special time coding mechanism specifically for biological motion information processing, which helps humans predict the actions of other organisms and can better Adapt to the environment.
