South Korea’s LG Petrochemical Company announced that it has successfully developed a naphtha catalytic cracking process. Compared with the conventional thermal steam cracking process, this new process can significantly increase the yield of olefins, increase the ethylene yield by 20%, and increase the propylene yield by 10%. It is said that this new process can be applied only with a slight adjustment on conventional olefin cracking plants.
The operating temperature of the new process is between 50-100 degrees Celsius, lower than the reaction temperature in the old process, so the new process energy consumption is lower than the conventional steam cracking method. Now LG is trying to further reduce the coking rate of the cracking furnace to extend the service life of the cracking furnace coils, increase the continuous operating time of the cracking furnace, and reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. However, LG said that this new process requires its proprietary catalyst. The catalyst is a metal oxide.
Industry experts believe that once the technology is successfully applied, global olefin production will increase significantly.
