Which plate sleeve should we choose?

Currently, there are three types of digital photosensitive resin sleeves available for flexo printing manufacturers, namely: seamless plate sleeves, plate sleeves and thin sleeves. In the face of three kinds of sleeves, what choice should the printing company make? Here, we will focus on a comparative analysis of the characteristics of these three types of sleeves and the cost of plate making.

1. Seamless seam plate sleeve

There are two types of seamless plate sleeves to choose from.

(1) There is a pad type: This type of sleeve does not require sticky material. Depending on the density, there are also a variety of liners that can be selected based on different combinations of plate and substrate materials. This type of sleeve is more suitable for mesh reorganization with more than 100 line/inch screens. The thickness range is 0.185 to 4.0 inches; the minimum repeat length is 10 inches and the maximum repeat length is 48 inches; the minimum width is 12 inches and the maximum width is 69 inches.

(2) Non-cushion type: This type of sleeve also eliminates the need for adhesive plate material. Applicable to mesh reorganization, field drafts, and linework with screens less than 100 lines/inch. Most background colors are suitable for such sleeves. The thickness range is 0.085 to 4.0 inches; the minimum repeat length is 10 inches, the maximum repeat length is 48 inches; the minimum width is 12 inches, and the maximum width is 69 inches.

2. Sticker sleeve

Sticker sleeve technology is now not new technology. Many paper processors use such sleeves. It requires a base sleeve (with or without a liner) on which a digital sheet-fed printing plate is pasted with adhesive tape and then exposed and developed. Because it is imaged on the roller, it can guarantee a higher registration accuracy. It can be combined with a seamless plate sleeve to optimize equipment performance.

The most common form of application for a sticker sleeve is a 0.04 inch thick sleeve, a 0.02 inch thick paste material, and a 0.067 inch thick digital plate. The disadvantage is that there are still problems with the plate.

3. Thin sleeve technology

Thin sleeves are the latest technology in the current flexo sleeve technology market. Its production process and features are the same as those of a seamless printing plate sleeve. Thin sleeves come in two thicknesses: 0.085 inches and 0.125 inches. Thin sleeves are relatively inexpensive and can be thrown away when they are used up or damaged, and can greatly reduce the inventory of the sleeve.

Thin sleeves are a good choice for users with limited repeat lengths. Due to the appearance of this sleeve, it has not yet been accurately evaluated.

Table 1 shows the cost comparison of six-color work pieces with an area of ​​1000 square inches (repetition length of 20 inches and width of 50 inches) using different plate making methods, which does not include equipment costs related to plate loading. This cost is based on the U.S. market, so for domestic users, it is for reference only.
