Amazon and Apple Voice Assistant compete for fire to hotel room

According to foreign reports, the battle between Amazon and Apple's digital assistants has shifted to a new battlefield: hotel rooms. Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri began to compete for travelers' preferred voice control platform.

Marriott International Group, the world's largest hotel management company (hereafter referred to as "the Marriott Group"), has begun testing the voice assistants of two technology giants at the Aloft hotel in the Seaport District of Boston to determine which platform is best suited. Guests turn on the lights, close the curtains, adjust the room temperature and change the TV channels. In December last year, Wynn Resorts Co., Ltd. became the first hotel in the world to install Amazon Echo in the guest room, and installed Echo in the guest room of the flagship store Wynn Las Vegas.

Technology companies are using hotel rooms as showrooms that showcase new services and equipment that can also be used in smart homes. Amazon and Apple are vying to rule this nascent market. Smart Home promises to allow consumers to access or manage home systems such as heating, cooling, lighting and entertainment by making voice commands at home or using a smartphone remotely.

The Marriott Group is expected to decide to use one or more voice assistants in its chain of hotels by mid-year, which may drive sales of selected equipment. More importantly, it can increase the exposure of the winning enterprise voice activation device, making it expected to become the mainstream of the market.

"Amazon and Apple are currently engaged in a fierce battle in the digital assistant space," said Toni Stoeckl, an executive at Marriott Group. The Marriott Group currently has nearly 130 Aloft hotels in the United States and plans to open 100 Aloft hotels.

Trailgate Gates

Twenty years after Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates installed smart home software in Seattle's luxury homes overlooking Washington Lake, home developers, car manufacturers, and hotel managers are beginning to adopt this class. Technology, push it to the average consumer.

Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at market research firm Creative Strategies, believes that hotel rooms are Amazon and Apple display devices, making it an ideal place for guests to experience how digital assistants can make life easier. The analyst likens this to the installation of the iPhone Docking Station in a hotel room a few years ago, allowing guests to enjoy the music in their mobile phone in the room.

The key question is whether the interface can be personalized, allowing guests to log in to their account with familiar devices, or to use a standard set of skills related to hotel accommodation, such as getting news reports, checking weather forecasts, or using Uber. For hotel guests who are not familiar with the technology, voice assistants may be more suitable for them.

“It’s very interesting how much help the guests can do with the hotel’s digital assistants,” says Milanese. “Digital assistants are not mass technologies.”

New market

Crestron Electronics, a private residential and commercial automation company, said the hotel is a brand new market for digital assistants, and it expects the market to continue to grow. The technology developed by this company enables Alexa to be used with a variety of home appliances. The hotel business currently accounts for 5% to 10% of Crestron Electronics' annual revenue of approximately $1.5 billion.

“More and more home automation technologies will be deployed to hotel rooms,” said John Clancy, vice president of residential systems at Crestron Electronics. “In the beginning, the market was very worried about whether it would work and what expectations consumers would expect.”

Hilton's Waldorf Astoria hotel in Beverly Hills will open in June this year. The hotel will use Crestron Electronics technology on the iPad to allow guests to control lighting, temperature, television, alarm clock, room service and more. However, this app requires guests to enter with their fingers instead of voice control.

Considering

"We are currently working with a variety of voice assistants and have not yet integrated Siri, but it is certainly one of the voice assistants we will continue to explore and consider," Clancy said. Siri can be used on Apple's mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads.

The 1002 room Marriott San Antonio Mountain Resort & Spa has now placed Alexa equipment in 10 regular rooms and plans to house the equipment in another 100 rooms next month. Digital assistants can be used to control the lights in the rooms, but the resort is currently focusing on using Alexa as

Personal concierge service for booking rooms, keeping towels or toothpaste. The exclusive village claims that it has been testing Amazon's technology since last October.

Similarly, the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington began to deploy Alexa equipment in its rooms, allowing guests to find music or information like weather forecasts, destinations and more. The Alexa equipment of the Four Seasons Hotel does not have the functions of controlling lighting and temperature.

Marriott's Stocker said the company is looking for the ideal solution to make it a global platform. Aloft Hotel plays the role of the new concept “Technology Incubator”, and the success of the test will determine which digital assistant will be deployed to other Marriott hotels.

Hotel concierge

Stocker said that eventually the digital assistant will be able to play more hotel concierge roles. By connecting to your personal device, you can set the wake-up temperature, curtain opening time, and more.

Wynn has previously said that the company plans to equip Echo in all 4,748 rooms in Las Vegas this summer. The hotel spokesman Michael Weaver said they are considering installing Echo at other Wynn hotels. Echo's function at the Wynn Hotel is gradually expanding and has recently joined the ability to allow guests to listen to their favorite radio music.

The hotel is just a battleground for Amazon to push digital assistants to more consumers. Ford Motor said in January that the Sync Connect in-vehicle system will support Amazon Echo and its voice assistant Alexa. Through the Sync Connect connection, users can launch Ford cars and monitor vehicle locations at home through Echo's Alexa voice assistant. In the car, they can use App Link applications to communicate with Alexa to control various smart home devices to form effective two-way communication. Connected experience. Amazon is also working with BMW to implant Alexa into BMW's high-end sedan. In addition, Google has joined hands with Hyundai Motor to make Google Assistant a voice control service for Hyundai.
