"Local tyrants" Dubai and "willful" 3D printed palm trees provide free services

The wealthy Dubai City will once again add a landscape to its palm trees throughout the city, and the city’s management plans to deploy a 3D printed “smart palm tree” technology center in the city. As part of its “Smart Palm Tree” initiative, this will be the fourth palm-shaped solar technology center deployed in Dubai, the first 3D printed “smart palm tree” and the largest in the UAE using 3D printing technology . Outdoor structure. It is understood that this solar "smart palm tree" not only provides a shade, rest place for pedestrians, but also has free WiFi Internet access, as well as mobile phone and gadget charging.

As early as April this year, Dubai began deploying its first non-3D printed "smart palm tree". The impressive pseudo-plant structure was designed to add digital connection points to famous urban hotspots. Whether it's 3D printing or not, solar panels will be installed on these smart palm trees to capture the energy of the sun to provide technical support. It is understood that this 6-meter-high smart palm tree can generate about 7.2 kWh of electricity per day, enough to support their functions. Citizens can use this technology tree to find city information, access Wi-Fi, and charge their phones and tablets, all for free. In the first four months of the Smart Palms' inception, more than 2,100 devices were charged, and the integrated camera on the tree helped the public take about 2,000 selfies.

Prior to this, the Dubai City Government has installed three “smart palm trees” located at the beaches near the Dubai Yacht Hotel, Zabeel Park and the Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC). Although the location of this fourth 3D printed smart palm tree remains a mystery, developers are excited about its potential. “The fourth palm tree will be another milestone. It will create a unique structure using 3D printing technology and will be the largest 3D printing outdoor structure.” Viktor Nelepa, founder of D Idea Media, said his company Responsible for designing and building these structures for Dubai. He added: "The details of the installation will be announced by the municipal authorities later."

The 3D printed palm tree is said to use fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) instead of metal such as steel, which ensures brightness and durability. It has been designed with extreme weather conditions in the Middle East and is equipped with UV and humidity protection to reduce the maintenance requirements of these additive manufacturing structures.

Pamela Nelepa, public relations and media coordinator of the Smart Palms project, is pleased with the media attention that the project received and the ensuing understanding of the Smart Dubai program. “The Smart Palms project has been covered in more than 600 articles in more than 20 languages, including many leading international media companies such as Time Magazine, Independent and Reuters.”

The Smart Palms project is one of several initiatives aimed at improving the use of green energy in Dubai. These initiatives include smart city planning, green economy initiatives, and more. And the UAE has also announced 2015 as the “Year of Innovation” and expects the city to become more environmentally friendly in the coming years. In the next 12 months, D Idea plans to install 103 smart palm trees throughout the city.
